To the trolls … suck it!

HTML email (plussizebabydolldress.blogspot.com)

Weight LossFat HealthExerciseMy Boring-Ass LifeDickweedDiet Talk

Trigger warning: Fat hate and disability shaming.

General warning: Sarcasm against trolls

Between FFF and my own blog Adventures of a Part-Time Wheeler, I’ve gotten a few comments from trolls (at least one of whom doesn’t think they are … go me!).  I could probably ignore them, but my schedule has me busy enough that I feel like addressing the comments will at least shut my neurotic brain up on things that don’t matter in the grand scheme of things.

My orange tabby Bela who tries to sleep away trolls

My orange tabby Bela who tries to sleep away trolls

Our first is an anon here on FFF that didn’t even give a pseudonym:

Obese people die 30-40 years sooner than healthy people, that’s a statistical fact and there’s no escaping it. I’m thin and healthy, therefore I’m going to outlive all of you by several decades. Enjoy!

Cool … this means my fat great-grandmother is going to live to be a 120-130? She’s almost 91 now … that’s awesome! That’s a Star Trek-like life span. Go Grandma go!

Aside from the sarcasm … thin =/= healthy and fat =/= unhealthy. Despite significant congenital disabilities (one of which makes it really hard for my body to process cholesterol properly), I’m healthy and fat and disabled. The end.

Our second gem is from my blog.  This person from Florida (yup, I track IP addresses) is “A Concerned Citizen”:

This is shocking and depressing to read. I stumbled across your blog and am simultaneously saddened and disgusted. How on earth can you claim to be some sort of dancer when you admit that you cannot walk and are now to the point where you actively seek to avoid it (i.e. avoid “being ambulatory”)??? Walking is the most natural human activity there is. There is nothing “abelist” about it. In the whole of human history up until the last 30 or so years there have been no human beings that were so fat they could not walk. This is an issue related to diet and exercise, plain and simple. It is not genetics. It isn’t your spinal injury. It’s your diet and activity level. You can peddle all the excuses you want, but at some point you need to look in the mirror and realize that your greatest enemy in life is looking back at you. There are quadriplegics who are literally incapable of movement and they maintain a reasonable weight through a normal human diet. You are literally eating yourself to death and as your activity level lessens (due to your extreme obesity) your march toward literal death will only accelerate.

I almost didn’t think you were serious posting about “spinning” class. While I applaud your effort to do something beneficial for your body, I cannot fathom how you reconcile the utility of this activity with your simultaneous and literal abandonment of walking â€" the most basic human physical activity. This would be something like having celery sticks for dinner followed by an entire cake for dessert. The latter activity entirely negates the former.

The absurdity goes further â€" you’re some sort of exercise or kinesiology major. How can anyone possibly take you seriously? You’re supposedly an expert about human movement but are so fat you can barely move yourself. The irony, oh, the irony.

You can label me and those like me as “abelist” or “fat shamers” but you should know that while I accept your right to destroy yourself, you are encouraging others to not only accept but also embrace and engage in self-destructive behavior. That is shameful. Being obese is bad for your health. The medical research on this point is compelling. At your size your heart is most likely enlarged from struggling against the added circulatory stress that results from you having the biological mass of 2 or more normal human beings. You should be shamed, just as a drug addict or alcoholic should be shamed for his addiction. You are addicted to food and physical inactivity and, like a drug pusher, you are encouraging this addiction among others.

In the end, you can deny the obvious and serious health consequences that follow from your choices. But your beliefs are irrelevant when confronted with the objective reality of your situation. For example, I can jump from the roof a tall building believing completely that I can fly but the reality is that I will accelerate toward the earth at about 9 meters per second squared and go splat. Likewise, as you continue down your path your path you can deny the consequences that await you all you like, but they will not go away, an early and avoidable death awaits you.

Think about the choices you make. You can delete this post from your blog, I expect you will, but know that this is what normal human beings think about the morbidly obese. Your so called “fat activism” is not winning hearts or changing minds. Instead, it inflames those of us who choose to exercise and eat healthy and in moderate amounts. We understand you lack any and all self control but when you demand that you be accepted and lauded as normal and attractive we are insulted because we care about our bodies, we actually exercise self control, and we put in real effort to look and be healthy. If you want to eat yourself to death and ride around on a scooter because you’re literally too fat to walk then fine, but don’t ask the rest of us to fucking applaud you for doing so.

So many gems in this one. First of all, saying that walking is natural is ableist. The end. Congrats you win the Asswad Olympics. Besides that, anyone who reads my blog knows that I haven’t “abandoned walking.” I use something that physical therapists call “pacing” in that I make careful choices about how much I walk so I am physically capable of doing things that make me a happier and healthier individual (like dancing and spin class).

Oh, and in regards to having the gall to call myself a dancer with a spine injury? I present AXIS Dance Company, a mixed ability dance group.

While this clip doesn’t have any fat people, they do have fat dancers that are involved (and if I lived in the Bay area, I would take classes with them all.the.time.)

Secondly, there are a plethora of fat people who have logged their food intake online so other people can look at it, which usually results in people crying “liar” or some such.  There’s also a lot of research that invalidates the calories in/calories out paradigm.  I’m not going to dig up the research for you (PubMed is free) and I’m certainly not going to post my food diary.

Speaking of food, since you mention that my physical activity is worthless because I use a scooter to get to the gym … celery is tasty and so is cake. There are fat people who like celery (like me) and thin people like cake. One food does not negate another … it’s not that the cake dissolves all the nutrients in celery, all the while laughing at you.

I am a kinesiologist who studies physical activity and, because of the scooter, am able to be back to exceeding the national recommendations for physical activity. BECAUSE OF using the scooter. BECAUSE OF pacing and choosing to use my very limited spoons on something that matters deeply to me: being physically active. I use a scooter because my peripheral nerves (the ones that go to the legs) are severely damaged because I broke my spine dancing, and then fat-shaming twits of doctors decided to tell me to hold off on having it fixed until I lost weight. You know what? I even got some injury to my spinal cord because of this bullshit.

On that thread, people do take me seriously as a physical activity scholar. You know why? Because I talk the talk and metaphorically walk the walk. I talk about how physical activity adoption is hindered by fatphobic attitudes like these in society. I talk about the fact that if people don’t like what they’re doing in terms of physical activity, they won’t stick with it … especially if they only adopted physical activity for weight loss instead of health. I cite research that shows that physical activity is important for people of ALL SIZES and ALL ABILITIES for health promotion (spoiler alert: sedentary thin people have a very similar morbidity/mortality profile to sedentary fat people … there’s some objective evidence for you). I could go on … but long story short, if people didn’t take me seriously in this field, I wouldn’t still be in this field. I’m not a masochist.

Oh and regarding your ending, dear heart (sarcasm, if you miss it) … as someone who fits one of the Good Fatty stereotypes because of my choice to be physically active and eat healthily (which you must think I’m referring to salad with a gallon of ranch dressing at each meal because you think I’m eating myself to death), I “believe” in the objective reality that 95% of diets fail and that this attribution of your current “health” and “ability” to your theoretical thinness is completely misguided. Additionally, if you think I lack self control, there’s no way I would have been able to be at this point in my education (check out the Fuck Yeah! Fat PhD project in response to a shitty tweet about the same misconception).

I’m not asking for you to applaud me â€" quite the opposite actually. I want fat people like me, and fat disabled people like me, to be treated as humans. Not as walking/rolling death symbols. Not as thinspiration or inspiration. AS PEOPLE, just like you, who make choices in life to get through the day-to-day. Just because I’m physically active doesn’t mean that physical activity is either physically or mentally good for everyone (hint: health is multidimensional and multimodal). Just because I choose to eat a baked sweet potato for dinner (yum) doesn’t mean I’m more or less human.

Didn’t your parents ever tell you that if you don’t have anything nice to say, then shut the fuck up and mind your own business?

#AVAandVIV Launch

HTML email (plussizebabydolldress.blogspot.com)
Ava & Viv, Target Plus Size clothing,
The launch of the #AVAandVIV line from Target was kicked off with a swanky party in the penthouse of the Standard East Village hotel co-hosted by myself, Gabifresh, & Nicolette Mason.  The room itself had the most beautiful panoramic views of NYC. The guest list included some of your favorites like, Maddy from Plus Model Magazine, Denise Bidot, Nadia Aboulhosn, Alissa from Stylish Curves, CeCe from Plus Size Princess, Sarah from Curvily, along with media from Fashionista, Yahoo, and Refinery29.  I even got my mom to come from Georgia and hang out for the evening. Hi mom!

At the event you were able to physically look at #AVAandVIV on display racks. see it on mannequins, and gorgeous models. It really gave you a feel for the style of the clothing, which casual, cute, but still put together.  Everyday casual is always a challenge to me and I know I've gotten a lot of requests for more everyday kind of looks, so I think #AVAandVIV does a good job of answering that.  I, myself, have only tried on a few items, so I look forward to trying on some more. There's a fun video below that totally captures the event, the clothes, and the fun.

FYI: There been a few questions about launch date.  I just want to clarify that officially the #AVAandVIV launches online Feb 22, BUT will be a rolling launch for the in-store arrival from now through March.  Pieces have already started showing up in-store.  I actually went to my local Target about 5 days ago and saw a couple things in store, so definitely cruise by the plus size section to see what has arrived. Also, here's a random tidbit, so at the party I found out about Target's cartwheel app that yields all types of coupons, it's easy to use while shopping in store, and eliminates the physical couponing.    My mom was getting the scoup from the Target team.  She does not play about her coupons. HA!

#TCFStyle Inspiration: Winter Layering

HTML email (plussizebabydolldress.blogspot.com)

Marie’s Note: Today, we bring you a spanking new series to the blog- #TCFStyle Inspiration, due to the emails, inbox messages and questions received about what to wear where or how to mix this with that and more! So with a little help, some creativity, we bring you the first in our series- Winter Layering!

Baby!!!! It’s COLD outside and before you pack on the pieces, let’s talk winter layers… Shall we? I think winter layering is about strategically piecing items together that both coordinate and allow a comfortable change in body temperature, especially in an office environment.  Did I mention this has to be done in a fashionable way? But, of course!

Now I would think one of the biggest fears or misconceptions about layering is looking big or bulky. In the office, being bulky or feeling stuffed is the last thing you want to feel.  When done correctly the results of layering can be a smooth and effortless.  Here are some tips and #TCFSTYLE inspirations to help you achieve “Winter Layers” with ease in the office.

#TCFSTYLE Winter Layering Tip: Play with textures and thickness

TCFStyle Inspiration Winter Layering Tips

Why This Works:

  • A Sherpa fleece coat and lightweight dress underneath streamlines the look and adds dimension with patterns.
  • Opaques tights are a great foundation piece for winter layering.
  • Fashionable winter accessories complete the look and keep you warm.

Shop this look:

H&M- Sweater Dress / SixKisses- Coat  / BlackFive- Scarf

Nordstrom Rack- Fringe Crossover  / Duo Boots

What do you think of winter layers? Do you even rock them? Are you a pro? Have a tip? Need help? Let’s talk in the comments below!

Suffering, Caretaking and Sacrifice

HTML email (plussizebabydolldress.blogspot.com)

Fat HealthMy Boring-Ass Life

Disclaimer: I am neither a psychologist, nor a mental health professional. The following is solely my personal opinion.

Are you a caretaker?

No? Doesn’t sound familiar?

What if I asked if you were a people-pleaser? Sound a bit closer to home? No?

Maybe this one might be closer to the mark: nice. Are you nice?

Yes! Yes, of course you are!

You’re nice. Super squishy, sugary, goody-good nice.

You’re nice to everyone â€" everyone â€" even when it hurts you to be so. Maybe you patch all that pain over with the idea that being that nice is being a good person. Sacrifice is a sign of goodness. You’re partially right. But, truthfully, being nice should never hurt.

I am a recovering nicey-nice caretaking people-pleaser. Well, honestly, I thought I was a recovering caretaker, but during the holidays I was reminded that the road to recovery is long, hard, and covered in pitfalls and backslides.

You see, my in-laws were here for Christmas. Naturally, I wanted to show them a good time while they were under my care and make sure that we all ate well (because I’m super good at that). I was not trying to impress anyone … Husby and I have been married long enough where I’m no longer worried about that anymore.

So I was in the kitchen every day since they had arrived, going out of my way to prepare health-filled goodness for us to enjoy together. Veggies were everywhere. Stuff was being made from scratch. I pulled out all the stops and even dug into my recipe trove for ideas.

This could simply have been a result of the fact that my kitchen has been überclean since I broke down and got some household help, which makes it easier to get into the kitchen and want to do something because cleaning doesn’t have to happen first. It could also be because going out to eat with four people is a bit demanding and expensive (ignoring the fact that lots of restaurants close for the holidays here). Maybe I was just really prepared that week.

But if I’m really and truly honest with myself, what I know is that this behavior was simply me exercising my caretaking side. Because I never cook like this for myself. Never.

Left to my own devices, I can easily dress up a pack of instant noodles with some frozen (or dried) veggies and a Julia Childlow-sodium bouillon cube instead of the MSG-filled salt-bomb they usually include in the package. Done and done. Even with Husby, meals can be just as simple.

Yet, throw in another couple of folks from wherever, I go full-on Julia Child. It’s been this way as long as I can remember. Sure, it’s natural for me to want to care for those around me that I have affection for by preparing a tasty meal. I believe that this is healthy, loving behavior. But what I’m really talking about here is more than that. What I’m talking about is when being nice and a people-pleaser goes too far. When it becomes a compulsion.

This behavior can even go as far as becoming something referred to as “caretaker personality disorder.” A great definition of the disorder can be found in this article which I’ve reposted here:

According to [Les] Barbanell, [author of “Removing the Mask of Kindness”] these ‘nice’ people feel unhappy, empty, guilt-ridden, shameful, angry, anxious, afraid of rejection and abandonment and are emotionally and physically exhausted because they are brought up to put the needs of other people ahead of their own. [emphasis mine]

This. This is what I’m talking about. When your need to care for others trumps any need of your own. Being so kind that it hurts you.

According to an article in Psychology Today,

As a caretaker, […] it is your job to please and take care of the [borderline or narcissistic person in your life (usually a family member)] first and foremost. To do this you will have learned to ignore your own needs, adapted to a highly emotional tense and chaotic environment, and become hyper-vigilant to the BP/NP’s emotional reactions. Your job is to do everything that the BP/NP is not willing or able to do, give in to whatever the BP/NP wants, and carefully monitor the family’s image in the community. [emphasis mine]

No, my in-laws qualify neither as borderline nor narcissistic personalities, so this is not about them. They’re lovely people. I’m quite fortunate.

But I believe that through certain, unfortunate circumstances, most anyone can be forced into a narcissistic state where everything they do is focused purely on them, with no regard for those around them. I also believe that if you are subject to this influence by a family member or other guardian figure while in a vulnerable state, such as during adolescence or childhood, you can develop caretaking habits. But I also believe that you do not need to be exposed to such a person in order to develop this habit.

Because caretaking can be a way for you to get people to like you.

And that’s it, that’s the thing there. When you’re fat, you’re concerned about getting people to like you.

Because society says that fat people are not worth liking. There’s something wrong with us. Stay away or get fat too. It’s the worst.

But none of that is true. We are awesome people. We are perfect, just as we are today, worthy of love and trust and friendship and care. We are wonderful folk, just like the rest of them.

So when I catch myself defaulting to the caretaking habit I’ve cultivated through my years of learned self-hatred, I remember this: I like me and the feelings that others have about me do not affect that.

Giving every last piece of myself to everyone else is a way to guarantee that there is nothing left for me. And when there’s nothing left for me, there’s nothing more to give, and everyone suffers.

Remembering to love myself and take care of myself reminds me that I do not need external validation to be valid or valuable. If someone can care for me by seeing past the veil that is my fat, that person is worth spending my valuable time on. These people are the ones worth getting into the kitchen and whipping up something fantastic for. They like me for me.

So on that note, let me get back to my stove, I’ve got a lemon meringue pie to throw together.

Love Your Chub Sig

Lets Do It Again!

HTML email (plussizebabydolldress.blogspot.com)

Happy Monday all!

As you all know, I love me some  Pinterest (follow me here!). So during one of my  daily visits,   I came across  Who What Wear’s article “9 Fashion Risks Every Woman Should Take”.  One of the risks that instantly caught my eye was wearing all red. Red is absolutely one of my favorite colors.  It’s such a vibrant, powerful color that looks great against my skin.  Emboldened by my all white ensemble on Friday, I decided to start the work week right by wearing all red!

Have a wonderful day!

Art Feature: Backhanded Compliments by Van Scribbles

HTML email (plussizebabydolldress.blogspot.com)

Backhanded Compliments. I am sure you and I could go back and forth with the many received as a plus size woman, but when I saw this series by Van Scribbles on Tumblr, I knew that I had to feature this series in our latest of plus size art! Granted, this is more than plus size, as she delves into quite a few, but I definitely wanted to feature the plus size picks that Vanessa has fashioned for us!

I mean… most recently, I was on a plane and the man sitting next to me says, “You do not look like you are into tech or are a nerd.” Oh. Okay… -_- major side eye.

So before I share with you the initial series, let’s talk about Van Scribbles’ prefacing post about Giving Compliments! Are you ready?

A New Year Beauty Resolution: Going Bold

HTML email (plussizebabydolldress.blogspot.com)

Tracking Pixel

This is a part of a sponsored series with Sally Beauty.

All opinions, reviews, and thoughts are my own!

So it is the time for New Year Resolutions and let me tell you, I am here for all of this newness. As I have a lot planned for the business side of things, for me and my beauty goals, well, I could definitely use a few kicks in the tail here, especially as I am already on the “do more outfit posts kick!” So rather than list out ten beauty resolutions, I thought I would give myself a singular New Year Beauty Resolution- Going Bold.

A New Year Beauty Resolution: Going Bold

If you have been following the spring trend reports and the beauty ones then you may have caught that there were quite a few bold statements and trends on the runway! Thanks to the kick in the behind from Sally Beauty to make this happen, I have this fun post here for you! Let me share with you what a few of these resolutions and trends are and how I am going to rock it.

Please bear with me, as I am NOT a pro but a lover of the beauty products! If you have tips to make it pop even better, drop those below! :)

Bold Lips in both RED and Pink

Rocking a red lip has been the greatest challenge for me and I have documented this on the blog many times before, but I AM GOING to do this! You hear me!?! Hehehe

A New Year Beauty Resolution Going Bold How I make it work:

  1. When putting on my BBCream or foundation, I will make sure that I apply this to my lips as a primer.
  2. Then I line AND fill in my lips with the liner- for maximum staying power (also I do not have full lips, so this helps me cheat a bit).
  3. BLOT.
  4. Then I apply my lipstick to make this work!
  5. VOILA, fancy lips in both a red or pink hue!

A New Year Beauty Resolution Going Bold What I Used: Real Colors Hydra Lips Waterproof Gel Lip Liner in Pinup Pink with Femme Couture Ultra Hydrating Lip Colour in Fabulous Fuchsia and Palladio Retractable Lip Liner in Red Rose with Real Colors Hydra Gloss Stick in Shock It To Me

A Strong Cat Eye

Now, I am used to playing around with fun and fancy color eyeliners, HOWEVER a strong cat eye? I am not toooo used to, especially in black. BUT, a new year is all about trying and testing out new things, right? And since it is trending on the runways, I had to give it a whirl or two or … who knows! RIGHT.

A New Year Beauty Resolution Going Bold How I make it work:

  1. Starting from the inner corner of my eye, I create a fine line
  2. To make my wing, I follow the bottom lash line, working from the inside out! I do not want to get tooo fancy, so I keep it just a bit playful.
  3. After I wing it, I connect both lines and fill in!
  4. Please note, this does take practice and I am normally used to pencil, but love the look of a liquid liner!

What I Used: Palladio Herbal Liquid Eyeliner in Shimmer Black

Color on the nails

Usually, I keep a clean nail. USUALLY. However with this new Marsala color of the year, I had to figure a way to fancy this into my life. You all seemed to cheer this on over on FB, so I am giving it a whirl. SO I am giving my nails a bold look, in this FingerPaints color that was almost SPOT ON for Marsala!

A New Year Beauty Resolution Going Bold

What I Used: FingerPaints Nail Polish in Free Form Fawn

SO these are a few ways that I am making this work for me for the New Year- please hold me to it! And guess what? All of my tools and colors used you can cop at Sally Beauty!

I will also be trying different hues of pink and red, a stronger cat eye- out of my comfort zone and bold shadows and nails, but these are JUST a few!

But what is a Sally Beauty post without a great sweepstakes!?!

The Sweepstakes: New Year, New You Challenge

Like myself, Sally Beauty is challenging YOU to try something new â€" daring new hair color, bright new nail shade, fresh new lip color, new hairstyle, basically something NEW!
